(Don’t) Write

So you started a blog, but you can never decide if you actually want to write something. Good news. I’m here to (not) help:

  • JUST DO IT

  • Your writing is far worse than professional writers and good bloggers. DON’T DO IT

  • Even with hundreds of hours of practice, you probably still won’t get to their level. DON’T DO IT

  • Sure, your writing quality isn’t great. You also aren’t a master chef. But you and your friends still share pictures of the fun meals you make. DO IT

  • Writing is different from cooking (or art). It’s a direct look at your intellect and inner thoughts. Much more vulnerable. Do you want all your friends to know how mediocre you are? DON’T DO IT

  • Follow the Golden Rule. Do you wish your friends wrote and shared their writing? Yes, you do. DO IT

  • Yeah well maybe they’ve seen your writing and it’s so cringy that it’s completely turned them off to the idea. DON’T DO IT

  • Is that the kind of friend you want to have? DO IT

  • The topics you write about are niche. Even if the writing isn’t amazing, who else is writing train horn cost-benefit analyses? DO IT

  • There are so many more enjoyable ways of spending your time. Why not watch a movie? DON’T DO IT

  • But just passively consuming content (movies, TV, books, etc) feels wrong. At least try writing about them afterwards! DO IT

  • Do you know how many people are already reviewing these things? You have nothing original to say, your writing is worse than theirs, and no one will read your reviews. DON’T DO IT

  • You know who probably isn’t reading those (much better) reviews? Your friends. Turning them onto thought-provoking/moving/enjoyable content while exercising your writing muscles is a win-win. DO IT

  • Ok yeah but I can just send them someone else’s review. DON’T DO IT

  • Even if your writing is mediocre, it’s still fun to read for people who know you. Wouldn’t you be more excited by a friend’s review of The Godfather than any one of the 1 million other ones you could find? DO IT

  • Writing is an important professional skill. DO IT

  • Writing is an important life skill. DO IT

  • Writing is the best way to force yourself to understand your thoughts. DO IT

  • You can write things without publishing or sharing them and still enjoy most of the benefits above. DO IT

  • You don’t really have that much fun when you’re writing. Especially when it comes to editing and making your writing suck a little less. DON’T DO IT

  • It’s pretty fun to look back on things you’ve written though! And it can be pretty fun to write when you have an idea you like and you’re in the flow. DO IT

  • JUST DO IT

There really is something to be said for just doing things! Even if no one will read your writing, or worse, they will read it and dislike it, doesn’t it just FEEL better to give it a go? That’s really all that matters. Find YOUR Greatness
